Chile seeks arrests for alleged human rights violations

Arrest warrants for more than 120 former soldiers and agents of Chile’s National Intelligence Directorate were issued Tuesday for alleged human rights violations during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, CNN Chile reported. The scale of the order by Judge Victor Montiglio makes this the largest human rights prosecution case in Chile’s history.

Pakistan launches global manhunt for Mumbai suspects

Pakistan has launched a global manhunt for 13 fugitives wanted in connection with last year’s terror attacks on the Indian financial capital of Mumbai. Pakistan asked the international police agency Interpol to issue a global alert for the wanted men, Interpol announced Thursday. The alert did not identify the 13 suspects, but it said that “the fugitives’ names and other nominal data” will be sent to police in Interpol’s 186 member countries

New trial opens for murdered Russian journalist

Three men went on trial Wednesday in connection with the killing of Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, Russia’s RIA-Novosti news agency reported. Ibragim and Djabrail Makhmudov, who are brothers, and former interior ministry officer Sergei Khadjikurbanov, are not accused of killing Politkovskaya themselves, but being accomplices. It is the second time the three are being tried in connection with the 2006 murder.

Hundreds detained after China protests

Hundreds of people have been detained in connection with ethnic riots in the northwest last month, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported Sunday. Police in Urumqi, the capital of China’s remote northwestern Xinjiang Autonomous Region, said they had detained 319 people in connection with the July 5 riots, according to Xinhua. The detentions came in addition to the 253 detentions announced on July 29, the news agency said

Nazi concentration camp survivor, 90, found strangled

A 90-year-old Holocaust survivor was found strangled Thursday in his Upper East Side apartment, a spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner said Friday. Felix Brinkmann, a native of Latvia, escaped death for a year while he was in the Nazis’ Mauthausen, Ebensee and Auschwitz concentration camps

Mumbai terror trial to summon FBI

An Indian judge Friday allowed prosecutors to summon five foreigners, including FBI agents, to testify in connection with the Mumbai terror trial. Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam told CNN that the identities of the witnesses would not be disclosed. Prosecutors have argued that they need time to examine more witnesses despite confession of Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the alleged gunman captured alive from last year’s Mumbai’s terror assaults.
