Federer and Djokovic through in Cincinnati

World number one Roger Federer held off the challenge of Argentine Jose Acasuso to reach the second round of the Cincinnati Masters — where he will be joined by fourth seed Novak Djokovic. The top-seeded Swiss went through 6-3 7-5 in one hour and 10 minutes to earn a clash with David Ferrer. Acasuso was broken in the eighth game, with Federer then serving out to take the opening set.

South Korea president honors Yang’s U.S. PGA win

South Korea’s Yang Yong-Eun’s historic victory over Tiger Woods in the U.S. PGA Championship ensured he became the first Asian-born male winner of a major and prompted an excited reaction across the world of golf. The 37-year-old was two shots adrift of overnight leader Woods but kept his cool to card 70 to the American’s 75 to win by three on the final green at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.

VW seals $4.7B Porsche deal

Volkswagen is to pay ?3.3 billion ($4.7B) for a 42 percent stake in Porsche’s main production division, the two German carmakers said yesterday as they thrashed out more details of a move towards a full integration. In a move that will amount to a rescue of debt-laden Porsche, VW will also buy the automobile trading business of Porsche Holding Salzburg, Europe’s biggest vehicle dealer that is also owned by the sports car maker’s family owners.

‘Sick’ Stoner forced out of MotoGP races

Former world MotoGP champion Casey Stoner has confirmed he will miss the next three races in the series in a bid to cure the mystery illness which has hindered his season. Australian Stoner, the 2007 champion, has been suffering from severe fatigue since the Grand Prix of Catalunya in June — and was a dismal 14th in the British round at Donington in his last race. Doctors have now advised the 23-year-old Marlboro Ducati rider, who lies third in the standings behind Fiat Yamaha duo Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, to sit out the next three rounds beginning at the Czech MotoGP in Brno this Sunday
