Internet cut-offs, website censorship about to drop on UK
"Wash-up" might sound homely, conjuring visions of a family scrubbing up after a cheerful dinner as the evening descends. But it's also the name of a UK legislative process in which bills can become law through a quick process that bypasses normal debate. Wash-up happens at the end of a parliamentary term, just before new elections, and it is designed to finish non-controversial outstanding business.
But is it appropriate to use wash-up to ...

Appeals court rules AdWords doesn't infringe bidding patent

CBS lets the cat out of the bag on HTML5 video iPad tests
The iPad launch is a little more than a week out and unsurprisingly, Flash support is still nowhere to be seen. Content providers understand that Apple means business with this no Flash stuff, too. While no one else is openly talking about alternate plans just yet, it looks like CBS.com has begun testing HTML5 video playback, no doubt thanks to the iPad.

A Microsoft engineer last week said that to properly handle multicore processors, future operating systems should discard the multitasking systems of today, in favor of dedicating cores to specific tasks. This seems more than a little surprising.
The lack of native code development on Windows Phone 7 Series was always likely to discourage developers with large, preexisting codebases. Mozilla has confirmed that it is suspending development of its version of Firefox for Windows Mobile due to the inability to migrate to ...

Controlling Mars rovers: there's an app for that
What if, instead of pocket-dialing, you could pocket-send-a-Mars-rover-over-a-cliff? That was the goal of two programmers at EclipseCon 2010 (via Slashdot). A competition at the conference asked developers to either create an e4-Rover client or use one to move a demo robot over a model Mars landscape. Two participants, Peter Friese and Heiko Behrens, built the robot-controlling client into an iPhone application.
Entrants could win the rover challenge at EclipseCon in one of two ways. ...

If consumers like the new Windows 7 operating system, they'll have the much-maligned Windows Vista to thank. In part, that's because Windows 7 actually builds on the under-the-hood changes that came with Vista. But, it also turns out that the vast headaches created by Vista were just what the PC industry needed to improve their cooperation. With consumers lukewarm to Vista and many businesses shunning it entirely, both Microsoft and the computer makers realized that the standard way of business ...

With Windows 7, Microsoft is going back to basics. It's true of the product, which is as notable for its everyday performance as any one new feature. It's also true of how Microsoft plans to launch the new operating system on Thursday. Rather than go for flash, the company is focused on making sure that all of its partners are ready to sell lots of PCs and copies of Windows 7.
