The 62nd annual Cannes Film Festival opened in style on Wednesday as the film world descended on the French Riviera for the premiere of Pixar’s new 3D animated film "Up" — the first time an animated movie has ever opened the festival. Obama orders stop to detainee photo releases

President Obama has ordered government lawyers to object to the planned release of additional detainee photos, according to an administration official. The Defense Department was set to release hundreds of photographs showing alleged abuse of prisoners in detention facilities in Afghanistan and Iraq. “Last week, the president met with his legal team and told them that he did not feel comfortable with the release of the [Defense Department] photos because he believes their release would endanger our troops, and because he believes that the national security implications of such a release have not been fully presented to the court,” the official said

CIA says Pelosi knew about waterboarding; she says no

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is disputing a CIA account sent to Congress that raises questions about her insistence she was never told explicitly that waterboarding had been used on terrorist suspects. The CIA-prepared memo, provided to CNN by Republican sources, lists 40 briefings for members of Congress from September 2002 to March 2009. The first briefing on the list — on September 4, 2002 — was for then-House Intelligence Committee Chairman Porter Goss and Pelosi, then the ranking Democrat on the committee

Official who OK’d Air Force One jet flyover resigns

President Obama has accepted the resignation of Louis Caldera, the director of the White House Military Office responsible for the controversial low-altitude flyover of New York by a 747 plane used as Air Force One, the White House said Friday. The photo shoot, which President Obama said he was “furious” with, happened on April 27.
