Reporter apologises over MH17 story

Pro-Russian rebels have not been the only ones tampering with evidence from the Malaysia Airlines plane shot down over Ukraine last week.

Sky News presenter Colin Brazier rummaged through a dead passenger’s open suitcase at the crash site in a live broadcast yesterday.

Brazier picked up a toothbrush and a set of keys before admitting on camera: “We shouldn’t really be doing this, I suppose.”

Brazier’s actions came as Australia was calling for respect for the 298 dead in the crash.

Viewers were outraged, and there were calls on social media for Brazier to be fired.

Joe Watson, a professor of Mass Media at Baker University in the United States said it was a “horrible moment for journalism.”

BBC radio presenter Shelagh Fogarty said: “Sky!! Get your reporter to STOP rummaging thru the belongings at #mH17 crash site. ‘We shouldn’t really be doing this’ NO S*** Sherlock !! Those items are essentially sacred things now for the relatives. Just appalling.”

BBC presenter Jacqui Oatley tweeted she was “astonished”.

A post by Joey Blower added: “Colin Brazier has interfered with a crime scene in the most distasteful manner.

It must be investigated fully.”

Sky News later apologised, saying: “Today whilst presenting from the site of the MH17 air crash Colin Brazier reflected on the human tragedy of the event and showed audiences the content of one of the victims’ bags. Colin immediately recognised that this was inappropriate and said so on air. Both Colin and Sky News apologise profusely for any offence caused.”

Brazier later gave an account of the human remains at the site.

“I’ve been walking around, coming across body parts all the time, many of them charred beyond recognition,” he said.

“Men, women and children, indeterminate frankly, you can’t tell. Very often you are looking at charred spines, that’s all that’s left.”

Mystery surrounds death of The Patriot actress at 21

Actress Skye McCole Bartusiak, who portrayed Mel Gibson’s young daughter in the 2000 film The Patriot, has died in her Houston home. She was 21.

Bartusiak’s mother, Helen Bartusiak, told The Associated Press the actress had been living in a garage apartment at her parents’ home. She said the actress’ boyfriend found her unresponsive on her bed Saturday.

Helen Bartusiak said she tried to resuscitate her daughter but could not. She said the actress had been healthy and did not drink or do drugs and the family did not yet know a cause of death.

Bartusiak made her acting debut in the television miniseries Storm of the Century in 1999 and also had a role on 24 in 2002-2003.

She made her film debut in the The Cider House Rules in 1999 and starred with Michael Douglas in Don’t Say a Word in 2001. Her most recent move was Sick Boy in 2012.

Bartusiak was best known for her role in Gibson’s Revolutionary War epic The Patriot, where she played the daughter of militia leader Benjamin Martin who struggles to speak with her father.

The Patriot cast also included Heath Ledger, who died after an accidental overdose of painkillers and sedatives in 2008.

Game of Thrones star takes on airline

Maisie Williams is proving there is no stark contrast between her and her TV character, Arya.

Williams, who plays feisty Arya Stark on the wildly popular TV show Game of Thrones, was refused entry to a business class lounge operated by British Airways.

The 17-year old leapt onto Twitter to criticise the airline, who do not allow people under the age of 18 into the lounge by themselves.

“Denied from the business lounge once again for being under 18 and without an adult… @British_Airways sort your s**t out,” she said.

“I’m not saying I deserve special treatment,” she added.

“Just saying if 16-18 yr olds are grown up enough to travel 5400 miles around the world I’m sure we can handle sitting quietly in the damn lounge.”

In response, British Airways said:

“Hi Maisie. We’re sorry if you were disappointed, lounge guests must be 18 or older. We look forward to welcoming you soon.”

Williams, not content to end it there, continued.

“Yes.. @British_Airways fully understand that, my question is why Why can we travel alone but not use the lounge It makes no sense.”

British Airways said the policy was in place due to the complimentary alcohol bar, which could be freely accessed by anyone within the lounge.

Williams has yet to respond further.

The fifth season of Game of Thrones is set to start filming next month.

Queen’s Guard plays GoT theme song

Queen Elizabeth II may have politely declined an offer to sit on The Iron Throne of Westeros, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have the Queen’s Guard play the Game of Thrones theme song for her occasionally.

A video posted on YouTube over the weekend shows the men in the red jackets and fuzzy hats performing the world-renowned tune of the hit US TV series outside London’s Buckingham Palace to a crowd of enthusiastic locals and tourists.

The stirring rendition, bashed out during the changing of the guard, included military horns and drums, and was so convincing it elicited applause from the audience gathered outside the gates.

It is not known whether the Queen was inside the walls of her palace listening.

It’s not the first cover of the Game of Thrones opening song.

This year alone it’s been reinterpreted as a New Orleans-style jazz arrangement, a cheesy ’80s synth romp, and a one-woman choral work.

The original track is composed by Grammy-nominated German composer Ramin Djawadi, who also wrote music for Iron Man, Clash of the Titans.

Gossip: A prince, an aisle and a bunch of flowers

Prince George turns 1 tomorrow and even at this early age his parents are making sure he learns about his grandmother, Princess Diana.

Parents, Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, took George to Diana’s grave several weeks ago to mark her birthday on July 1, Woman’s Day reported.

“William is determined never to forget his mother and he feels it’s his obligation to make sure his children know what an amazing woman she was,” it quoted a friend saying.

“He’s starting early with George, and he and Kate often talk about her to him.”

As George reaches his big milestone, speculation is becoming frenzied that Kate is expecting her second baby. A statement is expected “fairly soon”.

Jennifer Aniston’s love life looks to be going through a good patch, with Woman’s Day confident the 45-year-old actor will be marrying fiance Justin Theroux at a Mexican farm this coming weekend.

Aniston reportedly paid $2.3 million to book out the entire foodie paradise, accessible by a dirt track, for the low-key affair she had dreamed of.

The 50 guests would include Aniston’s Friends co-star Courteney Cox and best friend Chelsea Handler, along with Sheryl Crow, Tobey Maguire and Theroux’s close friends Ben Stiller, Jason Bateman, Jimmy Kimmel and Howard Stern.

And Woman’s Day is also suggesting there may yet he hope for at least one apparently broken relationship.

A bunch of flowers had persuaded supermodel Miranda Kerr, 31, to give actor Orlando Bloom, 37, a second chance as a husband.

Bloom, who sent the flowers to mark the fourth anniversary of their wedding, was desperate to get Kerr back, and she had agreed to give the relationship another go on a trial basis, a pal said.

The outlook is more clouded for actor Gwyneth Paltrow, 41, and singer Chris Martin, 37, who were spotted enjoying a happy family holiday in the Hamptons.

Paltrow, who was starting to panic at talks of divorce, had been trying to convince her live-in ex that a third child would fix all their problems, but Martin was not impressed.

“He told her he wouldn’t succumb to her pressure and that the idea was not only desperate but selfish to the poor baby, being brought into a broken marriage as a band-aid, not out of pure love,” a friend said.

Meanwhile, concerns were growing for frail actor Melanie Griffiths, 56, who was wasting away following her split from Antonio Banderas, New Idea reported.

She had lost 7 kilograms and was having a heart-shaped “Antonio” tattoo removed from her right arm.

“Her heart is broken, she’s incredibly hurt, but also she’s very angry,” an old friend said.

“She’s not taking care of herself and is smoking like a chimney.”

New Idea also heard from another insider who told them actor Brad Pitt, 50, was taking a break from his relationship with Angelina Jolie, 39, after revelations of her youthful drug use.

It all became too much when a drugs video was followed by intimate photos of Jolie and Anton Schneider, her boyfriend during her teenage years.

Pitt had walked out to give the relationship some space, something he had done several times before.

Model Rachel Hunter’s long legs were “incredibly toned” and her face was “gorgeous and free from lines”, in a photo shoot for New Idea at Waiheke Island just weeks away from her 45th birthday.

The former wife of rocker Rod Stewart was keeping quiet on developments on the romance front, but did say she would not pass up on marriage if she met the right man.

“I’m in a situation now where I’m very open to having someone special in my life,” she said.

Another Kiwi woman reaching a milestone age is broadcaster Jenny-May Coffin who turned 40 this year.

The ageing process had not unnerved her, New Zealand Woman’s Weekly said.

She had been dying her hair since spotting her first grey hairs as a teenager, but used only natural skincare products.

“As a Maori, I think wrinkles make people more attractive because they tell a journey,” she said.

“Botox isn’t something I would subscribe to.”

Zac Efron gets topless in the wild

Zac Efron has taken his shirt off and stepped into the wild with Bear Grylls.

The Bad Neighbours star often gets topless and this time he sheds his shirt to scale a cliff with survival specialist Bear Grylls.

Efron joins the likes of Ben Stiller and Channing Tatum in stand-alone episodes of Running Wild with Bear Grylls.

In Efron’s episode, he scales down terrain in New York’s Catskill Mountains.

Grylls and Efron stand at the top of a cliff and Grylls decides they should take their shirts off, put them in their backpacks and throw the backpacks into the water so they will have dry clothes waiting for them at the bottom.

Running Wild with Bear Grylls premieres on NBC July 28.
