The making of an eagle

Sir Richard Taylor is giving a rare peak behind the scenes of Weta Workshop.

A short video featuring Taylor, the workshop boss, and supervisor Rob Gillies has been supplied to Fairfax Media by Weta Workshop.

It shows the creation of two giant eagles that were unveiled at Wellington Airport earlier this month to mark the release of the second film in Sir Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy.

The birds, which are characters in the films, weigh a tonne each and have wingspans of 15m.

They are suspended above the airport foodcourt.

While snippets of the clip have previously been seen before this is the first time in its entirety.
