The best music of 2013

REVIEW:

This week I have spent a lot of time wishing I was a TV reviewer. Compiling that end of year best of list would be a piece of cake – Breaking Bad for the win. And best film I’ve seen this year Gravity.

With 2013 offering an embarrassment of riches for music fans, I’ve never had such a difficult time compiling a list.

It was also the year that brought us selfies, Miley Cyrus twerking and licking a wrecking ball, one-hit-wonders Ylvis with The Fox (What Does the Fox Say), Robin Thicke, who strode blurred ethical lines in ill-fitting trousers, and Stan Walker, who uttered the quote of the year before meeting Beyonce: ”I might have to take a nappy in case I crap myself.”

Can’t ignore the ”spreadsheet with hair” in the living room, either.

Kiwi lass Lorde stormed the globe and all power to her. Love it or loathe it, Royals is the song of the year for many people even if it was, technically, released late last year.

Ladi6’s album Automatic is pretty special. There’s something so joyous and uplifting about Shine On.

Arctic Monkeys’ Do I Wanna Know was on high rotate and I also had Vance Joy’s Riptide stuck on endless repeat in my brain for weeks. I don’t know why, but I blame the same radio random that gave me Macklemore’s Thrift Shop. What What What What

From Christchurch T54 gave us the delightful Life is Swell from their wonderful album In Brush Park, while another local favourite for me this year was Doprah. In August I was unwell and in something of a fevered haze I discovered their song San Pedro online. It helped me get through so thanks for that, Doprah.

This year has been full of great music. Here’s a playlist of the best songs:
