A children's show host who was born with one hand is facing criticism from parents over her disability. BBC spokeswoman Katya Mira said the corporation has received at least 25 "official" complaints recently about Cerrie Burnell, new host of two shows on the BBC-run CBeebies television network, which is aimed at children younger than six. The official complaints do not count the dozens of negative comments lodged in Internet chat rooms, Mira said. In one chat room, a father lamented ...

"I mean, it's a weird movie," says "Watchmen" director Zack Snyder. "There's no two ways about it." Never was a truer word spoken about the graphic novel adaptation that has taken 23 tortuous years to get from the page to the screen. Indeed, for many years, it was a movie that was considered impossible to make. Alternately described as the "Citizen Kane of graphic novels" and the "the unfilmable film," a legion of directors have been attached to the ...

After nearly 150 years in business, the Rocky Mountain News published its final edition Friday, the victim of a bad economy and the Internet generation. The final front-page headline simply says: "Goodbye, Colorado." "It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to you today. Our time chronicling the life of Denver and Colorado, the nation and the world, is over." The Rocky Mountain News' owner, E.W. Scripps Co., made the announcement to the newsroom at noon Thursday, ending three ...

In keeping with the democratic nature of user-generated media, Facebook is inviting its 150 million users to help decide how the online gathering place is run. A week after a policy-change blunder sparked widespread protests, the Web's most popular social-networking site announced a new approach Thursday to give users more control over future Facebook rules and practices. Site managers published the Facebook Principles, a set of 10 values they hope will make Facebook more transparent, along with a proposed statement ...

It seemed like a good idea at the time: Skip the "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" -- the only major wide release this weekend and more or less review-proof -- and check out the new releases down at the local DVD store instead. I was up for this assignment. We all know how close "Slumdog Millionaire" came to bypassing theatres. The film was initially bankrolled by Warner Independent, and when that boutique shingle was rolled into parent Warner Bros., ...

The chief investment officer of the firm headed by financier Alan Stanford, who is accused in an alleged $8 billion fraud scheme, was arrested and charged Thursday in Houston, Texas. "It's your right to arrange Chen Xiao's life, and it's my obligation to serve you," read her online shop. Since December, Chen has been allowing others to decide what she will do each day, because for the most part, last year she said was awful. Her home town was hit ...

Chen Xiao had pretty much given up making her own decisions, and so decided to throw open her life to the whims of China's hundreds of millions of Internet users, known in China as netizens. "It's your right to arrange Chen Xiao's life, and it's my obligation to serve you," read her online shop. Since December, Chen has been allowing others to decide what she will do each day, because for the most part, last year she said was awful. ...

Matt Groening laughs -- a lot. Sometimes it's a chuckle of uncertainty, as when he talks about the fact that his weekly comic strip, "Life in Hell," is being dropped by its flagship newspaper, LA Weekly, after 22 years. Sometimes it's a snort of mischief, as when he describes working with "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, with whom he allegedly has a feud. But mostly it's a big, rollicking guffaw, the sound of a man who still can't quite believe ...

I remember my first viral video. The year was 2001 and I was a fresh-faced teenager with my first high-speed Internet connection. Someone showed me a Flash animation featuring 1980s Japanese video game images repurposed into a techno music montage. Or something. I'm not really sure. I didn't understand "All Your Base Are Belong To Us" then and I don't understand it now, but I can't deny its Internet significance. All I remember is that people wouldn't stop saying "Someone ...

The social networking site Twitter again stole a march on traditional media when it was the first outlet to publish dramatic pictures of the Turkish Airlines crash. Moments after the plane crashed at Amsterdam's Schipol airport on Wednesday morning the news was appearing on Twitter, iReport's International Correspondent Errol Barnett said. "This is a story that broke on Twitter first and continued to unfold from there. Eyewitnesses were posting comments about the shock of seeing the plane 'dive' and ...
