Iranian speaker calls for detainee rape probe

Iran’s influential parliament speaker has called for an investigation into allegations that post-election detainees were raped while in custody, state-run media said. Ali Larijani said that a special parliamentary panel “had carried out investigations into the situation in [Iranian] jails and the treatment of detainees and it should also look into whether jail rape allegations are true or false,” Press TV reported, citing Tabnak, a Web site associated with opposition politician Mohsen Rezaie. Meanwhile, Iran’s Intelligence Ministry, the government body that keeps tabs on political dissenters, warned the media against revealing what it called “classified data” after reports Monday that Ahmadinejad had purged four senior intelligence officials, according to Press TV.

Formula One reach agreement over 2010

Max Mosley, the president of motorsport’s governing body the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), has said there "will be a unified Formula One championship in 2010." The statement comes after Mosley spoke to the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council and the Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA), at the governing body’s headquarters in Paris. It seems FOTA, as the representitive of all eight teams that had threatened to set up a rival series, have settled their differences with the controversial racing boss. Mosley has reportedly confirmed a cost-cutting deal has been reached with those concerned which has ensured a deal for the next season.

UEFA charge Chelsea, Drogba and Boswinga

UEFA have charged Chelsea, along with players Dider Drogba and Jose Boswinga, after the controversial scenes which followed their Champions League semifinal exit to Barcelona. Drogba faces a misconduct charge for confronting referee Tom Henning Ovrebo after the final whistle, while Boswinga gave a controversial interview in which he criticized the referee in strong terms. Chelsea have also been charged with failing to control their players and fans, who threw objects on to the pitch at Stamford Bridge.
