Blaine County, Idaho, doesn't care for gossip. Celebrities from Ernest Hemingway to Demi Moore have resided in the county that boasts the exclusive Sun Valley ski resort and shows big respect for people's privacy, its sheriff told CNN on Tuesday. When Blaine County residents learned about Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl's capture several days ago, they kept a lid on it. And it looks like reporters won't get much information anytime soon about the 23-year-old soldier whose fate now lies with ...

From the outside, Johnny and Shanna Woodbury looked like the perfect couple. They had been married 13 years, owned multiple properties and were successful managers. They also had four beautiful children -- a son and a daughter fresh out of college they had prior to getting married and a 12-year-old daughter on the cheerleading team and an 8-year-old son on the honor roll. Together they had built and moved into their 7,200-square-foot dream home in Prince George's County, Maryland, with ...

California's crisis continues while Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders inch slowly toward agreement on the deep cuts necessary to close California's massive $26 billion budget shortfall. Now, even as the state continues to pay its bills with IOUs, the University of California, the nation's leading public university, is being forced to cut its budget by $813 million or 20%. It is highly unlikely that these cuts will be reduced by a budget agreement in Sacramento.

Indonesia is no stranger to bombings such as the one that rocked two luxury hotels in Jakarta on Friday. But this is no ordinary newscast: Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is speaking via videolink with astronaut Rakesh Sharma, who is aboard a space station. Indian pride soared as Squadron Leader Sharma, an Indian Air Force pilot, became the first in the nation to explore the celestial realm, part of a joint mission with what was then the Soviet Union. I don't ...

When physician and CNN medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta spurned President Obama's offer to become U.S. surgeon general, the White House resumed its search for qualified candidates to fill a role Obama called "America's leading spokesperson on issues of public health." On July 13, the President finally tapped Alabama physician Regina Benjamin for the post, calling his nominee "a relentless promoter of prevention and wellness programs" who "represents what's best about health care in America." A look at her accomplishments ...

Police believe six to eight people were involved in the shooting deaths of a Gulf Coast couple known for adopting special-needs children, authorities said Monday. Those include three people already in custody for the deaths Thursday of Byrd and Melanie Billings. The crime was "a very well-planned and methodical operation," said Escambia County, Florida, Sheriff David Morgan. "We are very hopeful that at least one more arrest and possibly two will occur today," as two persons of interest ...

The family of a Somali-American man who died in Somalia have said they want to know who is responsible for recruiting him to join an al Qaeda-linked Islamist insurgency. Jamal Bana is the third Somali-American from the city of Minneapolis to head to Somalia and die there. He is one of more than a dozen missing Somali-American men whose families believe have gone back to fight. "Someone must have put something in his mind," Omar Jamal of Minneapolis' Somali Justice ...

The 2009 Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress
U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Community Planning and Development
168 pages
The Gist:
There are few economic indicators as grim as homelessness. In its fourth annual report on the state of homelessness in the U.S., the Department of Housing and Urban Development found that some 1.6 million people stayed at homeless shelters from October 2007 to September 2008. The Department also noticed some troubling trends: more families seeking shelter ...

Community colleges are deeply unsexy. This fact tends to make even the biggest advocates of these two-year schools which educate nearly half of U.S. undergraduates sound defensive, almost a tad whiny. "We don't have the bands. We don't have the football teams that everybody wants to boost," says Stephen Kinslow, president of Texas' Austin Community College . "Most people don't understand community colleges very well at all." And by "most people," he means the graduates of fancy ...

More than 35,000 fugitives across the United States were arrested in June as part of an annual sweep that teams the U.S. Marshals Service with local law enforcement in a summer push to clean up the streets, U.S. Marshals said Thursday. Among the 35,190 fugitives apprehended during Operation FALCON (Federal and Local Cops Operating Nationally) were 2,356 fugitive sex offenders, the service said. "This might be considered the cream of the crop for the most violent felons that are out ...
