Mexican state postpones school start because of flu fears

Officials in Mexico’s Chiapas state postponed classes Friday for more than 1 million students in an effort to avoid a resurgence of H1N1 flu, which has sickened thousands throughout Mexico this year. Chiapas Education Secretary Javier Alvarez Ramos and state Health Secretary James Gomez Montes said classes will start August 31 for middle and high school students and September 7 for elementary pupils, the state-run Notimex news agency said.

Rosberg proves dominant in practise again

Williams driver Nico Rosberg continued his domination of this season’s Formula One practise sessions by again emerging quickest ahead of Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix. In searing temperatures, Rosberg posted a time of one minute 33.339 seconds in his second sesion around the 5.412km Sakhir circuit, the seventh time in 11 practise sessions this season that he has topped the timesheets. Fourth Oakland police officer dies after shootings

A fourth Oakland, California, police officer has died as a result of shootings that happened Saturday, a police spokesman said Sunday. John Hege, 41, was pronounced dead about noon Sunday at Highland Hospital, Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said. Hege was on life support Saturday, police said.
