Big Day Out festivalgoers should not let morning showers dampen their enthusiasm because the sun will shine on the festival’s return to Auckland when the party really gets going in the afternoon.
The country’s biggest music festival will be held at Western Springs Stadium for the first time tomorrow, after a one-year hiatus due to poor ticket sales in 2012, and Auckland should turn on some pretty typical weather.
A front coming north will bring rain to the city in the morning and some strong winds all day, but by the time psychedelic Aussie rock band, Tame Impala, start at 1.45pm, the weather should have cleared up.
“That front will not be very fat, and those clouds should be quite thin,” MetService meteorologist Daniel Corbett said. “By lunchtime the cloud will be have thinned and in the afternoon the sun will be breaking through.”
Winds will gust up to 50kmh, but with temperatures reaching 22 degrees Celsius conditions should be comfortable for the predicted 45,000 attendees, with tickets expected to sell out tomorrow.
“It will feel fresher for folks. By the time they are having a good old dance in the evening [the temperature] will be dropping to the middle upper teens,” Corbett said.
Stay sunsmart; sunscreen and hats are your friends, festival organisers say.
And if you get a bit cool in the evening, come prepared, there is a coatcheck on-site.
Parking at or near the new Western Springs site is limited, so the best way to get to Big Day Out is on public transport. Travel on special Big Day Out bus services, to and from the CBD, is included with the ticket.
Direct travel to Western Springs via the Western Line train stations is not advised. All train passengers should travel via Britomart and transfer to an event bus.

Five stages have been set up at Western Springs – the two main stages are the largest the festival has had – with a gourmet food area, art trail and a Metro pop-up cube new additions this year.
Don’t forget your ticket, ID, and medication if you take it. And you won’t be able to bring umbrellas, alcohol, or professional cameras.
