Sculptor follows up with sister act

A “big and chubby” woman has been keeping stone sculptor Renate Verbrugge very busy.

The artist’s latest work is a follow-on from a popular piece she created for the Te Kupenga Stone Sculpture Symposium on the Coastal Walkway last month.

Her piece, Gloria, was so popular with the public that she received phone calls from concerned people after she withdrew it from the auction.

Gloria was removed from auction and sold to a buyer in Nelson, who paid $12,000 for the work.

Verbrugge, who moved to New Zealand from Belgium 19 years ago, told people that Gloria had many older sisters.

Since then she has started her latest work, entitled Gloria’s Older Sister.

Verbrugge, who creates a lot of work with female figures, said Gloria’s big sister was a beautifully chubby woman.

“Female figures have curves and are very sensual. It’s quite nice to make something soft out of a hard material,” she said.

Verbrugge, who has had her work displayed in galleries in France and Japan, said when Gloria’s Older Sister was finished she would be on display in her open gallery in 286B Smart Rd.

“Hopefully someone in Taranaki will buy her,” she said.
