In March 2011, Rebecca Black became a household meme for the surreal disaster, Friday.
Since then, Black’s done a few things, most of which riff on her explosion of fame.
Notably, she self-released the follow-up My Moment, in which Black addresses the reaction to Friday, and starred in Katy Perry’s video for Last Friday Night (TGIF).
And while her former production company, ARK Music Factory, have continued to churn out more ‘Friday’-caliber pop surreality, like Alison Gold’s Chinese Food, it seemed likely that Black herself would be relegated to the same domain as the Star Wars Kid, Dramatic Chipmunk, and all those other one-time subjects of widespread mocking.
Apparently, Black has other plans.
Leagues away from the relative innocence of Friday, Saturday is a celebratory post-Carly Rae Jepsen hangover jam, featuring familiar pop tropes like a weekend which extends into infinity.
It also attempts to introduce some fella named Dave Day who looks like every young white guy in a hoodie ever.
