Rappers a smash hit

They’re Smashproof by name and smash-proof by nature.

Tyree Tautogia (aka Niue) was an immediate hit when he became the second member of New Zealand’s most successful hip-hop group to step into the ring.

Tautogia made his debut at an Auckland Boxing Association fight night against Hayden Kopua and won by a unanimous decision. The South Auckland rapper now joins fellow band member Young Sid (aka Sidney Diamond) as undefeated in the ring.

“I felt pretty mean after the fight . . . [I] got the result I wanted,” Tautogia says.

Weighing in at 98kg for last month’s fight, Tautogia wants to be down to 90kg by February 1, when he is pencilled in for another bout, in Hamilton.

“I thought I was fit but it was a bit of an eye-opener,” he says. “Now I’m training hard out because if I want to continue fighting . . . I need to be super-fit.”

Young Sid is 4-0 as a kickboxer after defeating Quintin Beatty last Sunday. Which leaves Smashproof’s Deach (Fred Faafou) yet to step into the ring.

“I’m already working on that,” Tautogia says. “We want to get the whole group in the ring and really be smash-proof.”
