Music queens battle for gift buying market

Kiwi teen pop sensation Lorde has gone toe to toe with Beyonce as the pair gifted the world early Christmas presents.

Lorde may be queen bee but her surprise single No Better couldn’t compare with Queen B’s full album of material, all with accompanying videos.

The Auckland singer, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, was last week nominated for four Grammys and saw her smash hit Royals named MTV’s best song of 2013.

Critics rated Lorde’s new iTunes-released track highly, with gossip king Perez Hilton saying: “We’ve got to say this song is very pleasing to our ear holes! It’s really a Christmas miracle that we have all these great new songs to choose from! Thanks Bey and Lorde!”

Slate described No Better as a contender for song of the summer, saying Lorde delivers rapid-fire, sing-songy descriptions of driving aimlessly, swimming, and forgetting all about school during the summer months.

Slate said the new single was “lighter, simpler, and [in spite of some dark lyrics] more confectionary than most of her debut album”.

Meanwhile, Lorde’s friendship with chart-topper Taylor Swift continues to grow, with the 17-year-old spotted partying at Melbourne’s Hibatchi Japanese Grill for Swift’s 24th birthday party.
