Kiwi TV pioneer Barbara Magner dies

Barbara Magner, one of New Zealand’s pioneer television broadcasters, died on Saturday.

She was 77 and had suffered Alzheimer’s disease in recent years.

Magner was a household name in the 1960s when Auckland’s AKTV1 created the local magazine programme Town and Around.

She was married to novelist Maurice Shadbolt, the second of four of his wives, and they had a daughter Brigid. Shadbolt died in 2004.

A family notice said her burial would be on Wednesday.
