Hobbit nominated for 3 Oscars


The second movie of the Hobbit trilogy has been nominated for three Oscars, with its main rival a George Clooney space thriller.

Sir Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has been nominated for best sound editing, best sound mixing, and best visual effects.

Gravity, starring Clooney was also nominated in those categories.

The Desolation of Smaug continues Bilbo’s and Gandalf’s quest with a company of 13 dwarves into the Kingdom of Erebor for a showdown with the treasure-loving dragon Smaug.

The movie, released on December 11, has been a serious box office winner, raking in NZ $970 million globally, according to boxofficemojo.com.

The first film of the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, was also nominated for three Academy Awards, but missed out on Oscars for best visual effects, best makeup and hairstyling, and best production design.

Gravity and American Hustle had the most Oscar nominations, with 10 each.

Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, released between 2001 and 2003, had 30 Oscar nominations, winning 17.

The Oscars will be held on March 2.
