Blood-red premiere for vampires

Wellington’s Embassy Theatre has been drenched in fake blood to mark the Wellington premiere of Kiwi vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows.

Blood-red carpet was draped over the entrance and ground as dedicated fans staked out the theatre this evening, hoping to catch a glimpse of the film’s ghoulish stars.

What We Do in the Shadows is a mockumentary comedy about New Zealand vampires, co-written, co-directed, and co-starring Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi.

Clement said he was looking forward to celebrating: “We’ll have a party with everyone then later we’ll drain them of their blood.”

The movie was filmed over five weeks in late 2012 at a soundstage in Miramar and various locations around Wellington, including parts of the Town Belt, the Mt Victoria Bowling Club and several Wellington city flats.

The film follows three vampires, Viago, Deacon, and Vladislav, who are trying to get by in modern society alongside their habit of feasting on human blood.

Early reviews of the film have been positive.

One reviewer described it as ”total surprise; a silly, scary delight” and another as a ”memorable, entertaining, and very, very funny; a bona fide, blood-red gem”.

What We Do in the Shadows is released in New Zealand tomorrow.
