Wolvie’s angry, spoiled and photoshopped

The man with the claws and the rippling six-pack is back. And he’s angry.

And you’d be too if you were badly photoshopped into two new posters for the Wolverine and a massive spoiler was dropped in the middle of your pre-teaser trailer.

20th Century Fox’s marketing department has somehow forgotten how cool there teaser posters were (see below) and decided that simply cutting and pasting an image of Wolverine going beserk onto the war-torn streets of Tokyo or a group of ninjas is enough to get people excited.

The photoshopping on the posters is stupid, recalling the badly executed posters for The Avengers last year, but spoiling what could have been a touching surprising cameo in the film is downright criminal.

The film’s director James Mangold put up a a six-second preview of the teaser trailer on the Vine (we’re now at the stage where we get teasers for teasers).

6 sec “Tweazer” for THE WOLVERINE on the Vine within the hour. I will supply you with a link in the next 15 minutes. Trailer drops tomorrow.

Spoiler alert

Right in the middle of the blur of footage is Jean Grey, the woman Wolvie fell in love with in the X-Men films and was forced to kill after she went bad.

Even if she’s a dream sequence or a flashback, there’s no reason for Fox to spoil what could have been a nice surprise for film-goers, like Wolverine’s cameo appearance in X-Men: First Class (without a doubt the funniest part of that film).

The posters and preview are bit of a stumble for Fox. Up until now they have marketed The Wolverine with a rare degree of respect for the material and had fans enthusiatic about the character after the critical and financial disappointment that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

The Wolverine is based on the celebrated Chris Claremont-Frank Miller comic series from the 1980s and, according to the official synopsis, finds “Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw, as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.”

The Wolverine is due for release later this year.
