Witherspoon to cops: I’m pregnant

Reese Witherspoon lied about being pregnant when she was arrested last month.

The actress was charged with disorderly conduct after losing her temper when her husband Jim Toth was stopped by police for DUI.

Witherspoon issued a public apology after she entered into a verbal disagreement with the arresting officer and ignored his request to stay inside the vehicle.

She has now given her first interview since her run in with the law and admits to saying some “crazy things” while intoxicated.

“I have no idea what I was saying that night. I saw him arresting my husband and I literally panicked. I said all kinds of crazy things. I told him I was pregnant. I’m not pregnant! I said crazy things,” she told Good Morning America.

“You only hear me laughing because I had no idea what I was talking about and I am so sorry. I was so disrespectful to him. I have police officers in my family. I work with police officers every day. I know better.”

Witherspoon went on to accept it was “poor judgement” for Toth to drive home after he had been drinking. She agreed they should have called a cab rather than travel back in their own car.

“It’s one of those nights,” she added. “We went out to dinner in Atlanta, had one too many glasses of wine. We thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not. And it’s just completely unacceptable. And we are so sorry and embarrassed. And we know better.”

Witherspoon insists she has grown a great deal following the incident.

The Oscar-winning actress joked that she may have blurred the lines between her day job and reality.

“There were so many lessons learned. Absolutely. When a police officer tells you to stay in the car, you stay in the car,” she laughed.

“I think I’ve played a lawyer so many times in movies, I think I am a lawyer – and clearly I’m not a lawyer. So, I learned a lot.”

Witherspoon has a seven-month-old son, Tennessee, with Jim and two children with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe – Ava, 13, and Deacon, nine.

The 37-year-old said the worst moment was breaking the news about her bad behaviour to her brood.

“I have to say that’s the hardest part about it. Having to tell our kids. And just embarrassed. You have to say when you make a mistake, you have to take responsibility,” she explained. “And we are taking responsibility and doing everything in our power to make it right. You just have to be honest with them. That was definitely the hardest part.”

Witherspoon also revealed that she had been in contact with Atlanta police this week to offer her apologies again.
