Despite Jewish Concerns, Obama Keeps Up Pressure on Israel

President Barack Obama has concluded that Israel and the Palestinians are unlikely to achieve peace unless they’re under external pressure to make the requisite compromises. Believing that a two-state solution is in the best interests of both parties and that time is running out for such a solution, the President is stepping up the pressure on both sides. That was Obama’s message at a White House meeting on July 13 with representatives of leading Jewish-American organizations, some of whom have lately complained that the President is unfairly pressuring Israel to make concessions on West Bank settlements, while going easy on the Palestinians.

Policeman to protesters: ‘Please, please, please go home!’

In at least one incident Saturday, police wavered in their resolve to break up demonstrators who had turned out to protest last week’s election results, a witness told CNN. “The commander was shouting at the protesters,” said Roger Cohen, a columnist for the New York Times, who came upon perhaps a dozen police who had faced off against a number of demonstrators at about 5 p.m. “The commander was shouting at the protesters, one of whom had thrown a rock at him,” Cohen said.

Pope visits Jerusalem’s Old City

Pope Benedict XVI will complete his eight-day tour of the Holy Land on Friday with a busy morning in Jerusalem’s Old City, including meeting the patriarchs of the Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic churches.
