LOST SONGS Jan Hellriegel (Rhythmethod) Acting spots in Xena and Shortland St, backing vocals for The Muttonbirds, Facebook posts about making hot chocolates with Dave Dobbyn – you simply can’t get more Kiwi than Jan Hellriegel’s resume. That she also produced a couple of damned fine 90s albums in It’s My Sin and Tremble and trod the same boards as Jeff Buckley, puts her at the forefront of a period of Kiwiana which doesn’t get much replay these days.

Album review: Flaubert’s Dance – Phil Broadhurst

FLAUBERT’S DANCE Phil Broadhurst (Rattle/ Rhythmethod) As one of Rattle’s more prolific artists, the first recipient of the MNZM award of services to jazz in 2001 and a three time winner of jazz album of the year, pianist and composer Phil Broadhurst is one of the main reasons why jazz in New Zealand is so vital and vibrant. Flaubert’s Dance is a tribute albums of sorts to some of his seminal influences such as Herbie Hancock (First Shot) and ECM artists Keith Jarrett (Loping), Tomasz Stanko (Scoreless) Manu Katche (Integrity) but Broadhurst, in quartet mode with Roger Manins, Olivier Holland and Cameron Sangster – aided by trumpeter Mike Booth, has that rare ability to acknowledge a love affair and take it in a direction where only he can go

Crowe walks in Brando’s footsteps

A few years after Marlon Brando’s 2004 death, Russell Crowe was contacted by a woman possessing a special package. The woman was one of Brando’s close friends and the acting great had entrusted her to locate Crowe and present him with a book of poetry, There Are Men Too Gentle to Live Among Wolves, by American author James Kavanaugh.
