In Beijing Burbs, Chinese Soccer Gets Its Game On

In the sprawling residential suburb of Huilongguan, northwest of downtown Beijing, the neighborhood soccer league is in the middle of its championship game. The audience, most of them the wives and children of the players, shout encouragement as two teams of men of all ages and sizes dressed in bright yellow and red run across the grass pitch on a college campus.

Pitcher lands himself a new home — at an assisted living center

When pitcher Josh Faiola walks out of the dugout on opening day with the Lake Erie Crushers, he’ll already have a large group of fans in the stands — his new roommates at the Belvedere of Westlake assisted living facility. The 25-year-old, who was drafted in 2006 by the Baltimore Orioles and is trying to work his way to the majors, admits he was caught a little off guard when he was told about his new housing situation.

Woods seven shots off the pace at TPC

Tiger Woods is seven shots off the lead after the second day of the Players Championship, with German Alex Cejka’s 5-under 67 putting him clear of the chasing field. Cejka, who has not won a tournament on the PGA Tour, leads Ian Poulter by two shots with a group of six players featuring this year’s Masters winner Angel Cabrera and the American Kevin Na two shots further back

Beaten Tiger says he needs to improve

Tiger Woods had to settle for fourth place as Sean O’Hair clung on for a one-shot victory in the $6.4 million Quail Hollow Championship in North Carolina. O’Hair finished with a three-under 69 to hold off fellow Americans Lucas Glover and Bubba Watson, with the world number one a further shot back after a frustrating level-par 72. Woods admitted afterwards that he is still looking to rediscover his best form after his comeback from knee surgery.

Pakistan hunts for cricket attack gunmen

Pakistani authorities released photos of two suspects Wednesday as they continued to hunt for the gunmen responsible for an attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team which left seven people dead. They also offered a 10 million rupee ($125,000) reward for information leading to the arrests of those behind the ambush on the visiting team’s convoy as players and match officials made their way to Lahore’s cricket stadium.
