Jolie jumps past Oprah to nab top spot on Forbes celebrity list

Media maven Oprah Winfrey earned 10 times more than Angelina Jolie last year, but the actress bumped the talk show host from the top spot on Forbes’ 2009 Celebrity 100 list just released by the business magazine. Jolie’s fame, evidenced by magazine covers and TV, radio, newspaper and Web stories, outweighed Winfrey’s, giving her the edge as “the most powerful celebrity in the world” based on Forbes’ formula, Forbes Senior Editor Matthew Miller said.

Madonna’s adoption appeal begins in Malawi

Madonna took her effort to adopt a 3-year-old girl before Malawi’s highest court Monday, as a man claiming to be the girl’s father said he was fighting for custody of the child. The 50-year-old singer had filed a petition to adopt Chifundo James, whose first name means “mercy” in Chichewa, the country’s national language.

Pop star Madonna suffered minor injuries Saturday when she was thrown off a horse after it was startled by photographers, her record label said. The photographers jumped out of the bushes to snap pictures of the 50-year-old singer while she was visiting friends in Bridgehampton, New York, said Liz Rosenberg of Warner Brothers Records.

Madonna’s adoption rejected by Malawian judge

Madonna’s petition to adopt a second Malawian child was rejected by a local judge Friday, an official said. “The decision came down to residency requirement and the fact that the judge believes she was being well taken care of in the orphanage,” said Zione Ntaba, a spokeswoman for the Malawi Justice Department.
