With the shock death of Daniel Jarque – the Espanyol captain who suffered a cardiac arrest after training on Saturday – fans were left wondering how a man in such peak condition could endure a fate typically associated with the ageing and obese. The incident comes almost two years after fellow Spaniard, Sevilla’s Antonio Puerta, collapsed in the first half of his team’s 4-1 victory against Spanish league rivals Getafe and died three days later aged just 22.

Tributes flood in following Jarque’s death

Tributes have been flooding in following the sudden death of Spanish Primera Liga side Espanyol’s captain Daniel Jarque at the age of 26 on Saturday night. Jarque passed away around 8pm local time when his heart stopped following a training session in Coverciano, Italy, where the squad are on a pre-season camp. Reports suggest Jarque was on the phone to his fiancee — who is eight months pregnant — at the time and she alerted two of his team-mates, who raced to his hotel room.

Huntelaar signs four-year AC Milan contract

AC Milan have completed the signing of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar from Real Madrid after the Dutch international striker successfully came through a medical at the San Siro on Friday. Milan announced on their official Web site that Huntelaar had signed a four-year deal. No fee for the player was disclosed but reports have suggested a figure of $21 million secured Huntelaar’s services
