Hurricane Jimena weakened Tuesday evening as the still-dangerous Category 3 storm closed on the Mexican peninsula of Baja California and the resort town of Cabo San Lucas.
With winds of 115 mph, Hurricane Jimena has Mexico’s Baja California peninsula in its sights. The Category 3 storm is expected to “continue moving to the northwest in the direction of the Baja California region,” said Robbie Berg, a specialist at the National Hurricane Center. Jimena is the 10th named storm of the Pacific season
Hurricane experts are throwing cold water on an idea backed by billionaire Microsoft founder Bill Gates aimed at controlling the weather. Gates and a dozen other scientists have raised eyebrows by submitting patent applications for a technology to reduce the danger of approaching hurricanes by cooling ocean temperatures. Bill, a Category 1 hurricane, moved along the New England coast Sunday morning as authorities maintained tropical storm warnings for parts of eastern Canada. Though beaches along the Massachusetts coast remained closed, the National Weather Service lifted its tropical storm warnings there at 8 a.m. Stuart Smith, the harbormaster in Chatham, Massachusetts, said there were reports of “insignificant” storm-related damage, but Bill did not cause much concern.
Hurricane Bill skipped Bermuda and set its sights on the Massachusetts coast Saturday morning, with forecasters warning people from New England to Newfoundland to be on alert. The storm is expected to pass off the coast of New England late Saturday or Saturday night and approach Nova Scotia on Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said.
Tropical Storm Claudette made landfall in the Florida Panhandle early Monday. The storm hit near the eastern end of Santa Rosa Island, just southeast of Fort Walton Beach in Florida, about 1:15 a.m. ET, the National Weather Service said.
