California blaze grows to 140,000-plus acres

A Southern California wildfire has grown to 140,150 acres as firefighters stay focused Wednesday on foothill areas north of Los Angeles, a U.S. Forest Service official said. Inmate-release plan hits snag in California Assembly

California legislators plan to keep trying Tuesday to find consensus on a controversial proposal that would release at least 27,000 inmates from state prisons. Greek firefighters continue to battle widespread blazes

Greek firefighters planned to continue to work through the night to contain dozens of wildfires, including a massive blaze outside Athens, authorities said. Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis called for calm on Saturday and said ground forces “will continue their superhuman efforts” until dawn, when air operations and water drops will resume. Authorities reported 75 fires across the country.

More than 100 U.S. schools closed because of swine flu

At least 74 elementary, junior high and high schools have closed across the country because of confirmed or probable cases of swine flu, the Department of Education said Wednesday. Another 30 schools have closed as a precautionary measure because of the H1N1 virus, Department of Education spokesman Massie Ritsch said. The closures — of both public and private schools across eight states — affect about 56,000 students out of the estimated 55 million students attending the nation’s 100,000 kindergarten-through-12th grade schools, Ritsch said.
