Ferrari dismiss 2010 F1 inclusion

Ferrari have restated their intentions to boycott the 2010 Formula One Championship because of a disagreement about the future of the sport, despite being included by the sport’s world governing body on a list of official participants for the next season. Peace breaks out in F1 budget cap row

Formula One’s budget cap row looks over as Ferrari and other leading teams submitted conditional entries to the 2010 world championship on Friday. Ferrari had led opposition from the Formula One Team’s Association (FOTA) against proposals by motor sport’s governing body Federation Internationale de ”Automobile (FIA) over a proposed $60 million limit on spending by the teams. The deadline to sign up for the 2010 season was Friday and Ferrari joined McLaren, BMW Sauber, Toyota, Renault, Red Bull Racing, Toro Rosso and Brawn GP in confirming their entries

Burnley win play-off to reach Premier League

Minnows Burnley have become the smallest town to have a team in the English Premier League, after securing promotion by defeating Sheffield United 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley. Wade Elliott’s 13th-minute strike proved enough as Burnley, a north-west town of only 80,000 people, made their dreams come true in what is billed as the ‘richest match in football’ because of the potential rewards that come with playing in the Premier League. Burnley were one of the original 12 members of the Football League, when it was formed in 1888, and they will now be playing football in the top flight for the first time since relegation in 1976.

British Masters falls victim to recession

The economic downturn has claimed another prestigious event on the European Tour with this year’s British Masters dropped from the schedule. The event had been planned for September 17-20 at The Belfry, but joins the English Open in coming off the “Race to Dubai” – the new name for the European Tour. Sponsorship from Quinn Insurance came to an end after three years and tournament organizers ISM have been unable to find a replacement

Renault join Ferrari in F1 boycott

The Renault F1 team have shown a united front with Ferrari with a threat to boycott the 2010 Championship unless proposed rule changes are dropped by the sport’s governing body. The decision comes in the wake of plans by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) to introduce optional cost-caps and technical restrictions for competing teams. Renault stated on their official Web site that the decision by the FIA to introduce two sets of technical regulations has led to the team “reconsidering its entry in next year’s World Championship.” Renault F1 Team Managing Director, Flavio Briatore said: “We refuse to accept unilateral governance handed out by the FIA.
