‘District 9’ determined not to stick to formula

Science fiction flicks featuring aliens can be a little formulaic: Aliens invade American territory, mass destruction ensues, and nine times out of 10, Will Smith rides to the rescue But the alien-infested “District 9,” opening in theaters Friday, takes things in a different direction — if the producer may say so himself. “It’s utterly original,” producer Peter Jackson — yes, “Lord of the Rings” helmsman Peter Jackson — told Entertainment Weekly. “In an industry that’s looking to make movies out of every obscure TV show, or sequels, or video games, you look at ‘District 9’ and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen,” he said.

Grief grips Binghamton after mass shooting

People who knew the suspected gunman in Friday’s shooting at an immigration services center in Binghamton, New York, were not surprised by his actions, the police chief said. “From the people close to him, the actions that he took were not a surprise to them,” Binghamton Police Chief Joseph Zikuski said Saturday. More arrests in N. Ireland over killings

Authorities in Northern Ireland say they have arrested three more people in the killings of two soldiers and a police officer in the province last week. A total of four people are now in custody over the killing of soldiers Cengiz “Pat” Azimkar, 21, and Mark Quinsey, 23, at the Massereene barracks March 7. Five people have been detained over the shooting of policeman Stephen Carroll, 48, in Craigavon on March 10.
