The mother of Grammy-winning pop star Bruno Mars has died in Hawaii. Bernadette Hernandez died on Sunday of a brain aneurysm, according to a publicist for Mars’ label, Atlantic Records, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak on the record.

Hate crimes bill goes to Obama for signature
The Senate passed groundbreaking legislation Thursday that would make it a federal crime to assault an individual because of his or her sexual orientation or gender identity. The expanded federal hate crimes law now goes to President Obama’s desk.
