Nigeria: Hundreds die during battles with militants

About 300 people have been killed in a spate of violence in northern Nigeria, the president of a human rights group said Tuesday. The violence has pitted Islamic militants against government police and troops in the north-central part of the nation, officials said. Attacks continued Tuesday in the suburbs of the northern city of Maiduguri, said Shehu Sani, president of the Civil Rights Congress, a human rights organization based in northern Nigeria.

25 dead in 5 days of battles in Kashmir

Five days of gunbattles between the Indian army and separatist militants in Indian-administered Kashmir have left at least 25 dead — eight Indian army troopers, including one officer, and 17 militants, the Indian military said Tuesday.

Adams: Free or charge N. Ireland suspects

Police in Northern Ireland should either charge or release suspects held over the killings of a policeman and two soldiers, Gerry Adams of Sinn Fein said Monday. Nicholas Hughes, whose mother gassed herself in 1963 at her London home while her two children slept in the next room, hanged himself at his home in Alaska, his sister Frieda told The Times newspaper.

An explosion, a scream, then silence

For 25 agonizing minutes, journalist Norm Beaman did not know whether his wife had perished in wild fires sweeping southern Australia, after he lost mobile phone contact following an explosion and a scream. Beaman, a veteran reporter for Channel 7 news, was racing home to his property on Mount Disappointment, north of Melbourne, talking to his wife Annie as she tried to defend their home from the fires that have left dozens dead.
