Simon Dallow on the go

He has spent years in front of the cameras but when it comes to acting, news presenter Simon Dallow is not so sure he has what it takes.

The One News anchor has a cameo in this week’s episode of Go Girls – his first time appearing in a television series.
Dallow reveals he was “very flattered and nervous” to be asked to appear in the new-look series.

“The opportunity to be part of an iconic New Zealand show such as Go Girls was just too tempting to pass up. Filming with the cast and crew was a great experience. They are a wonderful team and I’m sure the show is going to be a success.”

It’s a long-running joke on the show that Nan McMann (Irene Wood), the great-grandmother of Britta (Alix Bushnell) and Candy (Shara Connolly), has a crush on Simon, so when he turns up to MC a real estate awards ceremony, it’s a dream come true for her.

“I play myself, which is all too exciting for Nan,” says Dallow.

“I come in as a last-minute MC at a real estate awards function on the North Shore where Fran McMann (Ingrid Park) and Nancy Ping (Deanna Chiang) battle it out to win number one real estate agent. It’s a hilarious scene.”

Wood, who plays Britta and Candy’s mother, says Dallow was “a really good sport” for being on the show.

“Simon and I had a great chat behind the scenes comparing the similarities and differences in our jobs and the roles we play. He’s a charming man and it was a pleasure to have him around.

“As for his acting, he plays himself very well,” she jokes.

Dallow isn’t so sure about his acting chops.

“I haven’t seen my ‘performance’ yet and am a bit apprehensive to say the least… But maybe I should stick to my day job.”

He says being on a show set was a vastly different experience to reading the news.

“Unlike news, you get multiple takes to get it right rather than having your stuff-ups go live to the nation. But just like news it is a real team effort making a show like Go Girls. Everyone has their own role and works in sync so wonderfully, but there are more people involved than you’d expect.”

Regular cast member Park says the new cast of youngsters who replaced the former group of friends are “amazingly talented”.

“Of course, it’s great to be back working with Irene Wood. It’s largely the same crew as in previous years so I have a lot of old friends involved with the production as well.

“I love having two grown-up on-screen daughters. Candy was in the first and fourth seasons as well and it’s great to be spending more time with her in season five.

“Candy is such a little minx, and Shara (Connolly), the actress who plays her, is so much fun.”

Has the flighty Fran changed much during the series “The script calls her a little more ‘despo’,” says Park.

“I read that as funnier and more entertaining than ever.”
