Obama jokes off galactic blunder

The Force is strong with Barack Obama. The US President has bounced back from a galactic mix-up after he fused two Star Wars and Star Trek references into one at a press conference.

When talking about sequestration after a White House meeting earlier this month, Obama referred to a “Jedi mind meld”, which caused uproar from fans of both franchises.

There’s of course a “Jedi mind trick”, and there’s a “Vulcan mind meld” but the president’s Jedi-Vulcan mashup didn’t go down well with the fanbase.

But always keen to show he’s up to date with pop culture Obama now set out to make amends with Trekkies as well as Star Wars fans.

“After a very public mix-up last week, my communications team has provided me with an easy way to distinguish between Star Trek and Star Wars,” he said at last weekend’s Gridiron Dinner in Washington D.C.

“Spock is what Maureen Dowd calls me, Darth Vader is what John Boehner calls me.”

Maureen Dowd is a New York Times columnist, while John Boehner is the Republican House Speaker.

“And in the words of one of my favourite Star Trek character Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise-‘May the force be with you,'” Obama cracked.
