McKellen gets behind WTF campaign

Hobbit star Sir Ian McKellen has lent his support to Rainbow Youth’s WTF NZ campaign.

Rainbow Youth board member Laura McGillivray posted a photo of herself and the actor holding a ‘So F*cking Proud’ poster during a fundraising lunch in Wellington.

McGillivray said McKellen showed a keen interest in learning about Rainbow Youth and the WTF NZ campaign, GayNZ reported.

“It’s truly exciting to have Sir Ian McKellen’s support – I love the picture,” campaign coordinator Murray Riches said.

“Sir Ian is a tremendous role model to many young people in New Zealand and shares many of the values the WTF campaign stands for.”

“We are inspired by the work he does combating homophobia in the UK, and the public stand he has taken against discrimination based on gender of sexual diversity; including calling bulls**t on the Prime Ministers homophobic ‘gay red shirt’ slur in 2012.”

Riches added that “this work is aligned with the core values of the WTF NZ campaign, which is committed to creating a conversation around homophobia and transphobia, and empowering our communities”.

McKellen is in Wellington to shoot the final scenes of The Hobbit.

The second movie of the trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, is due to be released in December, with the final instalment, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, in set for release in late 2014.
