Hard work to create magic on ice

Grab your tiara, and open your imagination because everyone’s favourite fairy-tale characters are about to ice skate their way to life.

Disney on Ice Princesses & Heroes is in New Zealand to perform in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland over the next three weeks.

The international cast of 40 will portray the most famous cartoon heroes and heroines as they defeat dragons, discover new worlds and of course, fall in love.

The show will feature traditional characters such as Snow White and Sleeping Beauty, as well as newer additions to the Disney family, tour co-ordinator Rebecca King says.

“Every year we adapt and change the show to include new Disney characters and keep it fresh and interesting for the audience,” King said.

Twenty year-old Mariyah Thurston landed the role of the most-recent inclusion to the show, Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog.

The young American has been ice-skating since she was five and says all the intense skating and dance training has paid off and she now has a dream job.

“Meeting kids and seeing their excitement and energy is an indescribably good feeling,” she said.

It sounds like smooth sailing for the skaters but don’t let the glitzy costumes, fluffy story lines and adoring young fans fool you.

The cast have a demanding workload of 10 shows in five days in Wellington alone, and have had minimal time to adapt to their new surroundings.

“The skaters are athletes who train hard and know how to take care of themselves – it’s a full-time life choice,” King said.

Having just toured Asia, a week off in Auckland at the end of the show period in New Zealand will be a welcome break before the cast and crew head to Australia.

“It’s a tough schedule but it often doesn’t feel like work,” King said.

“We get to dress up and put on a show for the audience which makes it all worth it.”

The production opens on Wednesday night at the TSB Bank Arena in Wellington and then moves to Christchurch and Auckland.
