Chelsea bid to have transfer ban suspended

Gael Kakuta's move to Chelsea in 2007 has seen the club slapped with a transfer ban until 2011.
Chelsea are seeking to have the English club’s worldwide transfer ban put on hold until an appeal is heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The London outfit have already lodged an appeal against FIFA’s ruling, which prevents the club from registering any new players during the next two transfer windows. They had been found guilty of illegally inducing teenager Gael Kakuta to breach his contract with French club Lens two years ago. The CAS has now confirmed that Chelsea want that ruling to be suspended until the outcome of the appeal is known, which would likely allow Roman Abramovich’s club to sign players during the January window as no hearing date has yet been set. “Chelsea Football Club and Gael Kakuta have filed appeals at the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the decision issued by the FIFA Dispute Resolution Chamber on August 27,” said a statement on the official CAS Web site.

“Both Chelsea FC and Kakuta have requested that the FIFA decision be stayed pending the outcome of the CAS arbitration. A decision concerning the request for a stay is likely to be issued by the CAS at the beginning of November.” Kakuta is also appealing the four-month playing ban he was given by world football’s governing body.
