Album review: …Like Clockwork – Queens of the Stone Age

LIKE CLOCKWORK
Queens of the Stone Age (Rythmethod)

Gorgeously perverse as ever, Josh Homme’s queens for this sixth regal release include the queenliest queen of them all, Elton John.

But just as with bedfellows Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears, Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner and U.N.K.L.E.’s James Lavelle, dear Auntie Elton’s keys seem to be there for liner note-peculiarity rather than create a Josh’s-pool-party album.

What his guests do, though, is allow for Homme-oh-so-sexual raunchiness – and where previous full-lengthers may have focused on hard-and-heavy up-against-the-wall rockiness, Like Clockwork really allows the giant denim-clad rocker to “blow his load over the status quo” after a little more heavy petting.

More tub-thumping from Dave Grohl helps beef up the parade of rock n roll balladeering – but, make no mistake, this is QOTSA at its sexiest… its gorgeously perverse sexiest.
