Album review: Hi Beams – Javelin

HI BEAMS
Javelin
(Southbound)

Cousins Tom Van Buskirk and George Langford’s daft-as-a-brush party tunes (grab a copy of 2010’s No Mas for a fun listen) were musical montages cut-and-pasted with joy and guaranteed to raise grins on the dancefloor.

But their third outing sees them (oh, the horror) heading into the studio and employing instruments, with the result that their bedroom-boy abandon has taken on a heck-we’re-paying-for-recording-time-here ernestness.

Yup, there’s still a few smiling moments (usually accompanied by cowbells, wood blocks and hand-claps) and there’s no doubting their firm grasp of polyrhythms and peculiarity but, without the hilarity, it all tends to become wallpaper.
