Album review: Gratitute – P Money

GRATITUDE
P-Money
(FMG/Universal)

The Kiwi turntablist-turned-producer has a heck of a lot to thank for his American dream of an album.

Having gone there to ink a deal with stateside dollars, he’s paid them back with a production carved from soul-funk riffs, cop-show beats and Noo Yawk string, horn and keys sexiness.

He’s also dished the dosh to BK’s Skyzoo, Mobb Deep’s Havoc, Brooklyn duo MOP and heavyweights like Fashawn, Blaison Maven and Roc Marciano (while keeping it Pacific-style by introducing our homegrown Aaradhna to the giant stylings of Talib Kweli).

P-Money certainly seems like he’s left NZ behind – and there’s not as much of his clever cross-genre experimenting – for Gratitude, just whether his die-hards are as thankful for his departure and are willing to welcome him home is yet to be seen.
