Tiki Taane to headline 7s entertainment

Kiwi musician Tiki Taane is anticipating an “insane” experience when he headlines the entertainment at the 2014 Wellington Sevens.

Taane will perform on both days, starting with the opening ceremony on February 7, when he will welcome the 16 international teams to the tournament.

The musician and producer said he couldn’t wait to perform at the world-class sporting event, which would be a different atmosphere to what he was used to.

“Being that close to the rugby action, being a part of it, will be a huge buzz for me,” he said.

“It will be much different performing so far away from the crowd. I’m used to having a crowd right up in my face, whereas Sevens Wellington is like playing in a huge bowl. The audience will be a full 360 degrees, towering up about nine storeys, so it’s going to be insane,” he said.

Taane said he was also looking forward to performing a song with his father and Te Pou o Mangatawhiri kapa haka group.

“That song will be thunderous inside the stadium.”

Drummers Batucada will lead the fan trail along Wellington’s waterfront from Odlins Plaza to Westpac Stadium, while songstress duo Bella Kalolo and Rosita Vai also return to the lineup.

Sevens Wellington general manager Marty Donoghue said the tournament had wanted to bring in someone special to lead the entertainment lineup in 2014.

“Tiki showcases music that not only represents New Zealand, but also the tournament, and he’s got a great set lined up for the two days.”
