The Veils go independent

The Veils new album, Time Stays We Go, released on their own label Pitch Beast Records today, has shot straight to No 5 in the New Zealand iTunes album charts.

The London-based group fronted by New Zealand raised Finn Andrews parted from Rough Trade after their third album, released an EP on Pitch Beast Records but were expected to sign for a major label.

”We want to be able to make the records we want to make, when we want to make them, forever if possible,” Andrews said.

”If we don’t do it now we might never do it and that seems reason enough to just go and jump right in at the deep end.”

Andrews certainly wasn’t lacking in material with various estimates of between 60 and 80 songs being put through a culling process.

”I write all the time, so editing stuff down or just throwing stuff away is something I’m very comfortable with,” he said.

”You have to write so much shit before you get to anywhere even half way where you want to be, so it’s important to get good at throwing stuff away.”

The album was mixed by Bill Price (The Clash, Jesus & Mary Chain), whom Andrews convinced to come out of retirement.

”He has the most incredible way about him and brings so much warmth and depth to everything he touches and this is a big, sprawling, oak tree of a record,” Andrews said.

”I couldn’t imagine anyone else who would do it better. We lured him out with whiskey and stroopwafels.”
