Teacher forgets kid’s name and refers to him by race and gender, repeatedly

Waterbury Connecticut teacher, Kathleen Pyles, couldn’t remember her students name.

Pyles was addressing one of her students to allegedly tell him he was out of order and to return to his designated seat. The problem with the student escalated further when she addressed him using the incorrect name.  When the student corrected her she apparently felt asking him his name was not the appropriate method of correcting her mistake.

Instead she allegedly said to the child “How about black boy? Go sit down, black boy.” After the incident was brought to the attention of the school board, Plyles was put on administrative leave pending an ongoing investigation.

The district has called a meeting of teachers, students and parents to address these issues and deal with other issues of cultural sensitivity.
