Carrick misses penalty as Burnley stun United

England midfielder Michael Carrick missed a first-half penalty as English Premier League champions Manchester United suffered a sensational 1-0 defeat at newly-promoted Burnley. The home side scored the only goal of the game in the 19th minute when Stephen Jordan’s deep cross for Martin Paterson was headed away by United full-back Patrice Evra — only for Robbie Blake to meet the ball on the volley and fire a spectacular shot into the top corner

Shearer tastes defeat as Chelsea move up

Alan Shearer’s first game in charge of Newcastle ended with a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea to leave the north-east giants deep in relegation trouble in the Premier League. Second half goals from Frank Lampard and Florent Malouda earned title challengers Chelsea a valuable three points which lifted them to second place ahead of Liverpool’s match later on Saturday at Fullham.
