After the Health Vote, Republicans Plot Attack Strategy

The Senate’s first day of debate on sweeping legislation to overhaul the health-care system produced a squeaker of a vote — exactly the 60 that majority leader Harry Reid needed to overcome a threatened Republican filibuster that could have blocked him from even bringing the bill to the floor. But it also gave a clear picture of the Republican messaging strategy as the legislation moves forward into what promises to be weeks of tendentious debate after the Thanksgiving recess.

Rivals claim success in Afghan vote

Afghan leader Hamid Karzai’s campaign team claimed Friday he was on track for victory in the country’s presidential election, while his close rival Abdullah Abdullah also said he was leading the vote. Their claims came as election officials said the results of the vote, seen as a judgment on the Karzai government’s efforts in tackling Taliban insurgents, poverty and corruption, would be rolled out starting August 25.

Honduras suspends relations with Argentina

Honduras suspended diplomatic relations with Argentina on Tuesday in retaliation for having its ambassador expelled from Argentina last week. The move stems from tensions between the two countries over a June 28 military-led coup in which Honduran President Jose Manuel Zelaya was replaced by congressional leader Roberto Micheletti. When Honduran Ambassador Carmen Eleonora Ortez Williams, who had been appointed by Zelaya, did not protest the coup, Argentina took exception.
