Film review: Perks of Being a Wallflower

THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER (M) (102 min) Directed by Stephen Chbosky Starring Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, Ezra Miller American teen comedy/dramas set around an intelligent misfit’s first year in high school were once a very common genre. The Perks of Being A Wallflower, based on the cult novel, and written and directed by the novel’s author, is a very informed throwback to those times.

Stylish Felix secures third successive gold

American Allyson Felix cruised to her third straight women’s 200 meters gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin — but compatriot Jeremy Wariner failed to secure his own hat-trick in the men’s 400m. Felix clocked a time of 20.02 seconds in the Olympic Stadium to beat Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica into second, with Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie of the Bahamas in bronze. “It is very special for me to win here in Berlin,” Felix, 23, told reporters.

Former Samsung chief handed suspended jail term

A South Korean court on Friday found the former chairman of the Samsung Group guilty of a breach of trust in illicit bond transactions and sentenced him to a suspended 3-year jail term and a fine of 110 billion Korean won ($89 million), South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported.

Woods says he was not fined for outburst

Tiger Woods claims he escaped a fine for his outspoken comments about a tournament official after his four-shot win at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday. Woods lambasted European Tour referee John Paramor for warning him and playing partner Padraig Harrington for slow play in the final round at Firestone. Harrington, who led Woods by a shot playing the 16th, appeared rushed after the warning and ended up making a triple bogey eight on the hole to end his chances

Murray: ‘I’m ready to win Wimbledon’

World number three and Britain’s great tennis hope, Andy Murray, has told CNN he is ready to win Wimbledon at this year’s tournament. The 22-year-old kicks off his bid to become the first home-grown player to win the men’s title at the All England Club for 73 years, when he takes on America’s Robby Kendrick today. Kendrick, the world 76, has lost all three of his previous meetings with Murray, boosting the Scot’s hopes he can match Fred Perry’s feat of lifting the title back in 1936.
