More than 2,100 registered North Carolina sex offenders were found on the social networking site MySpace, the state attorney general's office said Tuesday. In response to a subpoena from state Attorney General Roy Cooper, "MySpace turned over the names, IP and e-mail addresses of 2,116 convicted North Carolina sex offenders found on its social networking Web site," Cooper's office said in a written statement. Cooper has requested similar information from Facebook, another popular social networking site, the statement said. MySpace ...

At the time, it seemed one of the unanimous lessons of the tragedy of Sept. 11 — law enforcement agencies at all levels of government have to do a better job of sharing information with each other in order to prevent terror plots. Making that actually happen, of course, is easier said than done, which is why newfangled, multi-organizational agencies were set up to promote cooperation and overcome turf battles. But now critics claim that these so-called fusion centers are ...

Former first lady Barbara Bush underwent heart surgery Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, a hospital spokeswoman told CNN. Jean Becker, chief of staff for former President George H.W. Bush, said that Barbara Bush, 83, was "fine" following the surgery. "In fact, she is awake," Becker said. "We, of course, naively wanted to keep it quiet -- Mrs. Bush did," Becker said Wednesday night. "She thought there was too much fuss the last time." Wednesday's surgery was not related ...

Sheila Bair, head of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation , is working hard to reassure everyone that her banks, all 8,305 of them, are safe. Repeating her familiar mantra Wednesday on the CBS Morning Show, Bair said of FDIC-protected accounts, "Nobody's ever lost a penny of insured deposits." Bair had good reason to be out on the stump. She knew that on Thursday the FDIC would release its report on the health of the country's savings institutions. Now the report is out, and you can sum ...

By his statistics alone, Barry Bonds would be considered one of the greatest players to ever walk onto a baseball field. In addition to a string of playing awards, Bonds holds the most sacred record in all of American sport: the all-time homerun record. From 2000-2004, opposing teams were so afraid of his ability they essentially refused to pitch to him, choosing instead to tactically move him on to the next base instead of allowing him to hit the ball. ...

A handful of state legislatures have declared it's closing time for Sunday alcohol sales restrictions, saying an extra day of sales could give their foundering budgets a much-needed shot of revenue. Those states — Georgia, Connecticut, Texas, Alabama and Minnesota — enjoy overwhelming voter support for an extra day of sales, but face opposition from members of the Christian right, who say that selling on Sunday undermines safety and tears apart families. "During times of economic stress, our families are ...
