Scientist and author Stephen Hawking is "very ill" and has been hospitalized, according to Cambridge University, where he is a professor. Hawking, 67, is one of the world’s most famous physicists and also a cosmologist, astronomer, and mathematician. Wheelchair-bound Hawking is perhaps most famous for ‘A Brief History of Time’ which explored the origins of the universe in layman’s terms, is considered a modern classic.

Verdict due in major Internet piracy case

The founders of a Swedish file-sharing Web site could face jail time and multimillion-dollar fines if convicted of copyright infringement. A verdict is expected Friday in the landmark copyright case between major movie studios and The Pirate Bay, one of the world’s most popular file-sharing Web sites. The site allows users to exchange files including movies, music, games and software, but does not host the files itself.

New gum could mean sticky end for mess

British authorities and environmental groups were welcoming the launch this week of the world’s first biodegradable chewing gum, which they say could help save some of the millions spent on clearing up the mess ordinary gum creates. The new gum becomes non-adhesive when dry and decomposes to dust within six weeks, a spokesman for Mexico’s Chicza Mayan Rainforest Chewing Gum told CNN. The makers of Chicza say it is the first biodegradable chewing gum ever sold.

Large ice shelf expected to break from Antarctica

A large ice shelf is "imminently" close to breaking away from part of the Antarctic Peninsula, scientists said Friday. Satellite images released by the European Space Agency on Friday show new cracks in the Wilkins Ice Shelf where it connects to Charcot Island, a piece of land considered part of the peninsula.
