It's summer time. And you know what that means: Harrowing international travel with your cell phone. While the sour economy may be keeping some travelers closer to home this summer, good deals on flights and hotels, and the growing strength of the U.S. dollar are enticing some travelers to grab their passports and book a flight to Europe and other parts of the world. And since cell phones are now so much a part of our everyday lives, ...

Barack Obama marked his first Memorial Day as president on Monday, calling on Americans to remember U.S. troops who died in the service of their country and navigating a Civil War memorial controversy. The president participated at the 141st annual Memorial Day wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery's Tomb of the Unknowns. The men and women buried at Arlington "waged war so that we may know peace," Obama said. "They were willing to give up everything for the defense ...

I've long been a fan of the Sonos music system, a collection of small, cigar-box-sized devices that attach to any stereo in my home and allow me to wirelessly stream digital music. I couple it with the music subscription service, Rhapsody, and get access to some 5 million songs — virtually anything I want to hear, whenever I want to hear it. As good as it is, Sonos got a little bit better today with the unveiling ...

Each year on Memorial Day, tens of thousands of Americans visit Arlington National Cemetery just outside Washington to pay tribute to the men and women who died serving the United States. For people who are unable to make the trip, a new online memorial provides a unique way to honor those service members who have fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan. The new Google Earth layer, called Map the Fallen, enables the user to pinpoint where, when, and how each service ...

A brother of a former U.S. soldier who was spared the death penalty has apologized to relatives of the Iraqi family the former soldier was convicted of murdering. New York authorities indicted seven people accused of running a prostitution ring on the Web site Craigslist, the state's attorney general announced Wednesday. The 47-count indictment unsealed Wednesday named the company's co-owners as Scott Rosenberg, 45, and Josef Davenport, 31. Five women also were named in the indictment, identified as bookers for ...

President Obama said Wednesday the United States must take the lead on energy, citing the "enormous job creation potential that exists." Obama's remarks came at the end of his first quarterly meeting with the Economic Recovery Advisory Board, which was created in February to provide the administration with independent, nonpartisan advice on how to promote economic growth and stability. The focus of Wednesday's meeting, which was streamed live on the White House Web site, was job creation and green energy. ...

Russian and U.S officials are meeting Wednesday and Thursday in Moscow to discuss a replacement pact for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty I, which is expiring in December. "The key thing is that our two countries seem to have decided that we do want to pursue very intensive negotiations between now and December 2009 to try to achieve a new treaty to replace START when it goes out of force December 5," said Rose Gottemoeller, the U.S. assistant secretary of ...

Top Republicans are demanding an apology from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or proof to back her claim that the CIA misled Congress about the use of harsh interrogation tactics. Pelosi last week said that she was briefed by the CIA on such techniques only once -- in September 2002 -- and that she was told at the time that techniques like waterboarding were not being used. Pelosi, D-California, said she learned from an aide that waterboarding had been used after ...

The most telling reaction I have encountered in the row over excessive expenses claims by British lawmakers came from a London taxi-driver. "I am sick and tired" he said "of hearing them excuse themselves by saying that what they did was OK because it was within the rules. Whatever the rules said, didn't they ever stop to ask themselves if what they were doing was right?" Now of course it is payback time. It is payback time in the sense ...
