China: Demonstrators demand security after needle attacks

Thousands of Chinese demonstrators crowded the streets of Urumqi in western China on Thursday to protest what they say is a lack of police protection, witnesses said. Over the past month, more than 400 ethnic majority Han Chinese have been stabbed with tainted syringes by Uyghurs, the Muslim minority, according to local news reports.

Chelsea to appeal FIFA’s player-transfer ban

English Premier League side Chelsea have said they will mount the “strongest appeal possible” following the transfer ban placed on the club by world football’s governing body FIFA. The punishment, which would prevent any new member joining the squad until 2011, was dished out after the club were found to have “induced” Gael Kukuta to breach his contract in a transfer from French league side Lens in 2007

Red Bull 1-2 as Vettel claims British GP

Germany’s Sebastian Vettel led home Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber to claim an impressive victory in the British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday. Vettel’s second success of the season leaves him 25 points behind world championship leader Jenson Button — who disappointed the home fans by finishing down in sixth place, the position he started from on the grid. Button’s Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello finished behind the dominant Red Bulls in third place, to close to within 23 points of Button in the world drivers’ standings, with Vettel breathing down the Brazilian’s neck.

Operator ordered to sell British airports

Britain’s competition watchdog has ordered airport operator BAA to sell three of its seven airports, including two in London. BAA must sell Gatwick and Stansted airports in London and either Edinburgh or Glasgow airports in Scotland within two years, the Competition Commission said Thursday
